Even very young children are drawn to books about ancient Egypt. There is something about those colorful mummies, the enormous pyramids, and the peculiar hieroglyphic writing that children find fascinating. In this unique novelty board book, Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo combine verse with photos of historical art from ancient Egypt. The photos have interesting textured surfaces incorporated into them.
The book begins by asking the reader if he or she has “ever tickled the toe of someone you know,” and there is a picture of King Tut’s gold coffinette that children can explore with their eyes and fingers.
Later on in the book, we are asked if we have ever “taken a while to sail down the Nile,” and there is a photo of a painted wooden model boat (c1985-1795 B.C) that has a textured sail to touch.
This is a book that will perfectly suit children who like to explore their world with their fingers. Though they would not be allowed to touch the paintings, statues, and other artifacts in a museum, in this book they can explore the art any way they want.
At the back of the book, young readers and their grownups will find more information about the nine artifacts that are shown in the book.
