National Geographic, 2004, 1-84507-050-X
The Allies had only the one chance so they had to make sure that they did the job properly the first time. The invasion of Europe, or perhaps the taking back of Europe, was to be a great crusade. Hitler had to be stopped once and for all. The Russians had kept Hitler's troops quite busy for many months and now it was time to open up what was called "the second front" something that Russia's Stalin had been asking for for years.
It was to be a huge and logistically very complicated project. In addition it had to be done without the Germans finding out what was going on. The German spies were fed disinformation and the Allies also made sure that what the German planes saw from the air would not tell them that an invasion force was getting ready to land on the beaches of Normandy in France.
The author not only tells the incredible story of D-Day, the days leading up to it, and the days after it, but he also tells the stories of several men who were there, men who landed on the beaches from landing craft and men who landed beyond the beaches, inland, in gliders and by parachute. The author does not gloss over the fact that there were horrific losses and that mistakes were made. He captures the feelings that ran high on that fatal day; the fear, the confusion, the chaos. Most of all his words convey how much the world owes to all those who participated in D-Day including the people behind the scenes who brought in supplies, who took out the wounded, and even the weather men who worked so hard to give the men in charge the best and most up-to-date information.
Full of superb photographs, maps, illustrations, and quotes from people who were there, this is yet another of the excellent books in the National Geographic library.
