The Authors and Illustrators - Profiles

David Biedrzycki

David Biedrzycki says:

”I always loved to draw and started when I was four. By the time I was in second grade I created my first superhero, " Jetman" comic book.

In second grade I was pretty good at drawing , however if you handed me a book I would just look at the pictures.

My second grade teacher saw I wasn't very good at reading and she really helped by reading to me and the class a couple of times a day. I caught the book bug and by the end of 2nd grade I was struggling but I was starting to read. By 3rd grade I was still struggling but I was doing better. By 4th grade you couldn't get a book out of my hands. By 6th grade my stories were written better and I was starting to deal with plot, characters, setting and character development. I have the drawings to prove it.

I also never ran out of drawing paper. We didn't have a lot of money when I was growing up and my mom worked at a local restaurant. I couldn't wait for her to get home on a Friday night. She would bring home a big stack of paper from the italian restaurant that would have the menu on one side and a clean side. It's on the other side of those menus where I would create my art.

My high school didn't offer any legitimate art classes but I was always drawing.

When I got to college I was a little behind with painting and some basic concepts. After college I went into commercial illustration and did a lot of work for, magazines, ad agencies and book publishers and supported my young family. I started illustrating children's books in 1996. In 2005 my self authored book "Ace Lacewing Bug Detective" came out and has put me demand as school visiting author/illustrator. I have been honored to have visited over 300 schools all over the country and overseas to Japan, Germany and Guam in the past 4 years.

Since 1998 I have been creating art on my computer. I bring this technology with me to school visits and wow the students with a giant screen presentation. I show them the basic seeds I use to create my ideas for books and how I write and draw my stories at the same time. I also create digital art right in front of them and leave a copy of it for the school to hang up.”
