Many people don't realize that women did not only work on the home front during World War II. They also were in the front lines. Their roles where many; they were nurses and administrative staff, they drove trucks and flew planes, they were cooks, and they were also war correspondents. For many the idea of woman running around with cameras, dressed in battle gear, and taking dreadful risks in the middle of battles was unacceptable and yet it did happen.
"Where the Action Was: Women War Correspondents in World War II" is an excellent history of these brave and determined women. It is also a book filled with fascinating personal stories about pioneer women journalists and photo-journalists. Often they had the most extraordinary adventures during their efforts to find the story and uncover the truth about what was happening in Europe, North Africa, and the Pacific. With many black and white photographs and with actual newspaper dispatches, this book is inspiring and uplifting.
