As long as he has been the Spook’s apprentice, Tom Ward has been acutely aware that his job is to protect the Country from boggarts, witches, and other malevolent creatures of the dark, which he has done faithfully for many months. Since the Fiend was released into the world, the situation in the County has become worse. Tom and the Spook are needed more than ever to fight against the forces of evil.

As he continues his studies under the tutelage of the Spook, Tom gets a letter from his mother, who has left her home in Greece and is back to the County. She needs help to battle a terrible female god called the Ordeen. Every seven years the Ordeen leaves the Ord, her citadel, to prey on the people who live around the Greek town of Kalambaka. Tom’s mother fears that when the Ordeen leaves the Ord this time, she will join forces with the Fiend and her revenge will be terrible. Not only will people in Greece suffer, but the County too will be attacked.

Tom’s mother – who is a lamia witch – gathers together the Pendel witches, the assassin Grimalkin, Tom, and another spook called Arkwright to help her in the battle ahead. Tom’s master is very apposed to the plan. He hates to see good people use forces of the dark to fight the dark. In fact, he is so angry that he refuses to help Tom’s mother, and he dismisses Tom from his service. With a sad heart, Tom sets off on the journey for Greece. Will the Spook ever take him back, and will they be able to defeat the Ordeen without his help?

This sixth title in the Last Apprentice series continues to build tension as Tom Ward’s world slips further and further towards the dark. Tom makes some startling discoveries about his beloved mother, and he and his friends face a terrible foe that could destroy them all. Listeners who enjoyed the earlier titles in the series, are sure to find this tale thoroughly engrossing.
