It is the first day of Hanukkah, and Gabi is very excited. As soon as the sun sets, she and her parents light the first candles of the menorah, after which they all go to the kitchen to cook and eat latkes. Then it is time to play with the dreidel, and Daddy tells the story of the brave Maccabbes and the miracle in the temple. In the story, the Maccabees went to the temple after winning a battle. At the temple, they had an oil lamp that contained only enough oil for one night, and yet it burned for eight nights.

After the sharing the Hanukkah story, Gabbi’s parents give her a special gift, a little blue tricycle with a basket on the front. Gabbi loves her “trike,” but she soon discovers that she is going to have to be brave and hard working, just like the Maccabees, if she is going to be able to ride her new gift.

This holiday story tells the story of the first Hanukkah in a present day setting that children can identify with.
