Lydia Grace has to leave her family and her beloved garden in the country for a while to go and live with her dour uncle Jim in the city. Even though her uncle lives in an apartment building Lydia soon discovers that she can still have her flowers and plants, she just has to find a new way of doing things.
As Lydia explores new ideas of growing things and creates a home for herself, she also wonders what she can do to make her scowling and grumpy uncle smile. Is there some way to touch his heart and will Lydia find the secret?
