The First Day of Winter
Picture Book
For ages 4 to 6
Henry Holt, 2005 ISBN: 978-0805073843
It is the first day of winter and a snowman has been given a gift, a "red cap with a gold snap." Everyday the snowman’s friend (who is a little boy with a big toothy smile) brings something new for the snowman; two blue mittens, three striped scarves, four prickly pinecones, and so on. By the tenth day of winter the snowman is so perfectly dressed and accessorized that he is ready to explore the snowy world he lives in.
Written in a style similar to the much loved "Twelve Days of Christmas" and "This is the house that Jack Built," this simple picture book with its unique artwork is sure to delight younger children. Stencils and cotton fiber montages give the wintery scenes a soft lifelike appearance.
There can be no doubt that readers will be keen to follow the example of the little boy in the story and will be borrowing all kinds of items from home to add to their own snowman or snowwoman.
