Lu and Clancy are the best of friends and they are also partners. They are dog detectives, and together they have solved many puzzles and mysteries. Clancy loves to spend time with Lu, but he is not too keen on Lu's cousin Jake. When Lu suggests that they all go to the carnival together Clancy at first refuses the invitation because he does not want to spend time with Jake. Then Lu mentions going for a ride on the Drop of Doom, and Clancy agrees to go along. He loves the Drop of Doom; it is his favorite carnival ride.

Once they get to the carnival, Clancy and Lu discover that they have two big problems. One is that Jake has no intention of going on the Drop of Doom, and the other is that the detectives overhear two villains planning a theft during a ride on the Drop of Doom. How can the brave and intrepid detectives stop the villains if Jake refuses to go anywhere near the Drop of Doom?

Young readers who are ready for a little mystery and action will find that this book suits them perfectly. Lu and Clancy are a delightful pair, and the story is told in such a way as to draw the reader in, while at the same time encouraging the reader to explore new reading frontiers.

The author concludes the story with a magic trick that readers might like to try for themselves.
