The days are getting shorter and a cold wind blows down from the north. All the wild creatures are getting ready for winter. Ground hog decides it is time for his winter nap and many of the birds begin their journey to the warmer places in the south.
Of course there are others who are happy to stay where they are. They know where food is to be found or they have stores carefully hidden in their burrows and dens. The mice, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, rats, deer, and others are staying put. Some will sleep for part of the winter, warm and snug in their homes.
Then, when the first snow falls, there is much fun to be had scampering across the lovely snow covered landscape. However, when more, and more, and more snow falls, food starts to become scarce. Now the animals need a little help and luckily help is at hand.
This Caldecott winning book will charm young readers who are eager to read longer stories for themselves. As they read they will come to see that winter can be a hard time for animals, a time when many of them will need our help, human help, to be able to get through the cold months.
