Greece was a land where many powerful civilizations grew. There were the Minoans and the Mycenaeans who learned to write, created beautiful works of art, and who spread their influence to the peoples around them. Then, as the Dark Ages swept through Europe, the many of the Greeks traveled to other lands in the Mediterranean looking for new opportunities. They created colonies in what are now France, Italy, North Africa and Turkey. Those who stayed in Greece created city-states which behaved like little countries and while constantly fought with one another.
