One day a bear is walking past a house when he sees that someone has left a delicious looking cake to cool in front of an open window. Bear is very hungry and he would love to sample the cake – or eat the whole thing for that matter – but alas the window is “so far up” and he is “so far down.”
Pig comes along and jumps onto Bear’s head, but the window is still too far off. The situation does not really improve when Dog jumps onto Pig’s back, and when Rabbit jumps onto Dog. The window is still too far away. Hen and Frog add their height, such as it is, to the ladder of animals, but the window is still too high up for them to reach. Then a girl who lives in the house comes along and she takes the cake and closes the window. The animals collapse in a big pile on the ground next to the house. Alack, all is lost. Or maybe not.
Children are going to love this clever board book. With a minimal text and wonderful artwork, the author carefully unfolds her story until she brings us to the wonderful ending.
