The days are growing shorter, and soon the land will be covered with snow. The bear family is working hard to get their winter den ready for “their winter sleep.” They gather leaves to fill their den and then the mother bear helps her cub to understand what is going to happen in the months ahead. Since they will be asleep until spring, the mother bear tells the cub that they need to “say goodnight to our friends.”

They amble off through the forest, with its carpet of fall leaves, to say good night to Badger, Fox, Deer, Rabbit, the mice, Squirrel, Owl, and old gray Wolf. Warmed by their friends’ wishes, and taking a little gift with them, the pair head back to their den.

This is the perfect book to share with a child, particularly at bedtime. The gently lyrical text, which conveys so beautifully the genuine affection that the animals in the story have for each other, will surely become a firm favorite with young children and their grownups.
