Scaredy Squirrel Makes a Friend
Picture Book Series
For ages 4 to 8
Kids Can Press, 2007 ISBN: 978-1554531813
Scaredy Squirrel has no friends. He has no friends for a very good reason - because he thinks friends are dangerous. After al, friends may bite him and that would be a very bad thing. So Scaredy Squirrel plays it safe and keeps himself busy reading, knitting, doing crafts, and basically using up time as best he can.
Then one day Scaredy Squirrel finds what he considers to be the "Perfect Friend," a goldfish who lives in a nearby water fountain. The goldfish is a perfect candidate because it cannot bite, it is "germ-free," "squeaky clean," and "100% safe." So, in a state of great excitement, Scaredy Squirrel prepares to meet his new friend but alas, all his preparations are meaningless, for when Scaredy comes down from his tree he is accosted by a large hairy, slobbery, toothy, smelly dog. What could possibly be worse!
In this outrageously and deliciously funny picture book, children who think that everything in life can be planned, accounted for, and organized will discover that this just isn't how things work out most of the time. Certainly friendship cannot be sterilized and categorized. It is often a messy business, but it is also wonderful, priceless, full of laughs, and where would we be without it. Hilarious illustrations and a truly loveable main character make this a picture book that readers of all ages will come back to again and again.
