Annie Rose is a little girl with “brown curls” and a “big smile.” First thing in the morning sunny Annie Rose sings little songs to herself, a “chirpy” little bird standing up in her crib. Annie Rose loves Buttercup, her stuffed little lamb, and thinks that going splashing in the rain is wonderful fun.
Readers of all ages will love to meet this cheerful little girl and her charming world, which is peopled with favorite toys, much admired big boys, best friends, Grandma, and other important characters. Easy to read poems capture many aspects of this little girl’s life, showing the reader what it is like to be Annie Rose and how it feels to get grumpy at bedtime, play imaginary games, and feel afraid of the monster that lives at the end of the bed. In all there are twenty seven poems in this book, and for each one Shirley Hughes has created a special, richly colored and often highly detailed ink and gouache illustration which perfectly captures the mood of the accompanying poem.
