It is spring and lots of new babies are being born on the farm. There are kittens, chicks, a baby horse, lambs, and baby mice. Pup would love to play with the babies but the mamas tell him that their youngsters are too little to play with him. He must wait until they grow up a bit.

Feeling very glum, Pup goes off by himself and sits in the grass. And then he sees, lying right next to his leg, a lone egg. Who does it belong to? Pup and Hound take the egg to Duck and Mother Hen but both mamas say that the egg is not theirs. What should the dogs do now?

In this very sweet episode in the Pup and Hound series we get to see a different side of Pup and Hound's personalities. Though they do have an adventure of sorts, this is more about friendship and how the two dogs end up with a very important responsibility, one which they take very seriously indeed.

A gently rhyming, carefully written text and warm illustrations make this cheery story ideal for young children who are ready to read by themselves.
