For some reason young children are drawn to airplanes and helicopters. It is not unusual for young children to learn the word “plane” soon after they learn how to say “Mama” and “Dada.” They are fascinated by machines that go up into the air, which is something that they cannot do, no matter how hard they jump on their beds and bounce on trampolines. They may be airborne for a while, but they always come down to earth pretty quickly.

In this wonderful board book Steve Light introduces us to eight kinds of flying machines, and in each case we learn what they are called and what kind of sound they make. For example, the first spread shows us a seaplane and we are told that it makes a “GGRRRRRRRRRRRRR Putt Putt Putt ssSPLAAASHH!” sound. A helicopter, with its rotating blades makes a “PITTATATTATA” noise as it makes its way across the sky. Children are going to have so much fun saying the noises that are paired with these flying vehicles and the others that appear in this book, which include a blimp, a jumbo jet, and a space shuttle.

This is one in a series of board books created by Steve Light that explore different kinds of trucks, trains, and diggers.
