Children are naturally drawn to farm animals, especially baby farm animals. Often the first animals they get to know well, after household pets, are animals that live on farms or that they meet in petting zoos. In this simple board book richly detailed illustrations are paired with short sentences that include a description of the noises that young farm animals make.
We begin our noise-filled adventure by visiting a calf that is mooing at some adult cows that are in a field. There on the page we see the little calf making a “moo!” sound. On the next spread a little yellow chick “cheeps at chickens pecking in the coop.” We can see how different the fluffy yellow chick is when it is compared to the adult chickens.
Later on in the book, we see a lamb in a field with three adult sheep. We see that daffodils are blooming, and the text tells us that the lamb “bleats at sheep running in the meadow.” Sure enough we see the lamb, and the words sounds “baa! baa! baa!” are coming out of its open mouth. The simple narrative wraps up with us getting to meet lots of baby farm animals and we are asked “What do you say on the farm?”
