With her mother in a magic-induced coma, Clary is determined to go to Idris, the Shadowhunter home country. There is a warlock there who created the spell Clary's mother is under, and Clary hopes that she will be able to convince the warlock to tell her how to reverse the spell. There is a problem though. Clary's brother Jace does not want Clary going anywhere near Idris and the City of Glass. He is afraid that their dangerous father, Valentine, might attack the City of Glass next, and Jace does not want Clary anywhere near the place.
Clary, being Clary, does not let Jace dictate what she can or cannot do. Using her own special magical power, Clary manages to get herself, and a reluctant friend, to Idris. She and her friend have to sneak into the City of Glass because they don't have permission to be there. Soon after their arrival all hell breaks loose. Jace was right and Valentine does attack the city. The battle that takes place in the city is a terrible one, and Valentine gives the Shadowhunter leadership a terrible ultimatum. Clary hopes that she will be able to convince the leadership that they do have a choice, and they don't have to give in the Valentine.
In this riveting third book to the Mortal Instruments series, Cassandra Clare takes her readers on a roller coaster ride of bookish adventure, mystery, romance, and fantasy. Just like in real life, in this story bad things happen to good people, and one cannot be sure that everyone is going to have a happy ending. This heightens the tension of the narrative, and it makes it very hard to set the book aside.
