One spring day Big Bear leaves her winter den and she is not alone. Next to her is her brand new cub who is still wobbly on his feet and who has never seen the wide world before. She leads her baby, Little One, into the forest where sunshine streams through the leaves to touch the new grass on the forest floor.
Big Bear teaches Little One how “to be gentle” with the other forest animals, many of whom are much smaller than the bears are. She teaches Little One to enjoy the long warm summer days. Together they fish in the river and Little One learns how to swim.
As they days shorten, the two bears eat berries. Little One enjoys playing with the falling leaves, but Big Bear feels restless. She sees the geese flying overhead and knows that the time has come to prepare for the cold days that will soon be there.
With stunning black and white illustrations that perfectly capture the expressions of the bears and the beauty of their environment, Jo Weaver takes her readers into a world of simple lessons and pleasures. During the year that we get to spend with the bear mother and her child, we see her cub grow and explore its world, and see the changes that take place as the year unfolds.
