Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was buried under ash from the explosion of the nearby volcano, Mount Vesuvius, in 79 AD. The city, along with it's sister city Herculaneum was re-discovered in the 1700's and has been extensively excavated. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
