Sir Walter Raleigh

Sir Walter Raleigh was an English soldier and explorer. He was, at times, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, including being named the captain of her personal guard. He was the organzier behind the attempt to colonize America then ended with the lost colony at Roanoke Island, NC. He also traveled to South America on multiple occasions looking for gold. For more on these topics, please see features on Colonial Days in America, Ships & Sailors, and Explorers and Explorations.
