Roxy, a brown, white, and tan dog, is ready to go outside for a walk. She takes her leash to her young master, and then out they go from the dark house into the bright light of the outdoors. Roxy’s busy, smooth nose sniffs the rough sidewalk as they walk, and she picks up all kinds of scents.

Together the boy and his pet run past a big tree. Up in the branches of the tree a small bird chirps, but the two explorers are far too busy to stop and listen. It is a chilly day and the boy cuddles the dog, his cold fingers stroking the dog’s warm ears.

In this clever board book the author uses a simple narrative to introduce children to seven pairs of opposites. In the context of the story children will have no difficulty understanding what the opposite words mean, and they surely enjoy the simple narrative, which has a charming ending.
