Stink, Judy and their parents are going to Ocracoke Island for a vacation, and Stink is extremely excited. He is full of piratical verve, and with his survival kit on his back, he is ready to “meet pirates” and to “find treasure.” Stink is therefore thrilled when he and Judy are met by a pirate when they disembark on the island. The pirate, Scurvy Sam, invites the children to participate in the Third Annual Pirate Island Treasure Hunt. The next morning, Survy Sam tells the participants the rules of the treasure hunt and then he reads the first clue to everyone. There are five clues, and the first person to collect sixteen pieces of eight wins.

Soon Stink and Judy are off, looking for the thing that is described in the first clue. At first, they have a hard time deciding what the thing is, but then they figure it out, and before long they have six pieces of eight. They are a little worried though because two other children, Tall Boy and Smart Girl, seems to be doing very well figuring out the clues. Will they figure out the winning clues faster than Stink and Judy?

In this wonderfully entertaining story, Megan McDonald brings Stink and Judy together to give listeners an exciting adventure that is liberally sprinkled with pirate lore. Listeners will enjoy trying to solve the clues, and they will appreciate the way in which Judy and Stink make the right choice at the end of their adventure.
