Dark clouds are filling the sky and soon people are putting on their boots, raincoats, and hats. They are opening up their umbrellas because it has started to rain. Rain may seem like it is nuisance at times, when it spoils an outdoor activity for example, but rain is necessary. Without it plants and animals would not be able to survive on Earth.

Rain falls because of a fascinating process that is called the water cycle. Heat makes some of the water in lakes and oceans evaporate, and in the form of water vapor it rises up into the air. When it cools, condensation occurs, and under the right conditions the water droplets form clouds. When the droplets become heavy enough they fall as rain. Over and over again water is recycled by the water cycle.

Clouds come in many forms and they produce different types of rain. Rain can be in the form of a fine drizzle, a shower, or a rainstorm. Sometimes a thunderstorm occurs and rain is accompanied by thunder and lightning. If too much rain falls in a small period of time a flash flood occurs. People have to move to higher ground, and away from the dangers such floods produce.

Children who are interested in the world around them will surely enjoy learning about why rain is created, the forms it takes, and more.
