It is summer and everything is hot, dry, and dusty. Mick, Mack and Molly, the little squirrel children, are happily playing together when a flock of birds flies past. One of the birds tells the squirrels that a storm is coming. The children start to run home to the woods when the rain begins to fall. The raindrops are big and fat and the squirrels decide to take shelter in a small cave.
Inside the cave, they find two little mice children who are also talking shelter from the rain. Not long after the squirrels go into the cave, a rabbit comes along and he asks if he can join them in the cave. Together the young animals huddle together as the rain pours down, as thunder booms, and as lightening flashes.
This charming book perfectly captures the atmosphere of a summer storm. Though the little characters in the story are frightened by the storm, the little squirrels end up getting something wonderful out of the experience.
