Forests are incredible places that are full of interesting trees, plants, and animals of all kinds. Every living thing plays a part in the ecosystem in some way. In this clever lift-the-flap-title the author and illustrator take readers into a forest. There they get to find out about the plants, the animals, pond life, creatures found in the air and on the ground, habitats, and baby animals.
On the plants page we see how trees provide animals with shelter and food. The berries that grown on some trees and shrubs are a vital food source for birds and other animals, especially during the winter when food is scarce.
On the animals page we learn that moose are excellent swimmers, and that squirrels use their tails to help them balance on tree branches. Woodpeckers peck on the truck of trees to find insects that are hiding under the bark. They also excavate holes in the wood to create a safe and dry nesting hollow for their chicks.
The habitats that we visit are the homes of familiar animals. We see a fox’s den, the nest of a bird, the burrow of a rabbit, a beehive, a spider’s web and the dam that a beaver built.
Packed with wonderful illustrations and facts, and with six flaps to open on every spread, this is a wonderful novelty title to share with a budding young naturalist.
