All over the world animal mothers in zoos are having babies. Not surprisingly, these new arrivals tend to attract a lot of attention. After all, who can resist baby animals who, even when they are not exactly beautiful, are always sweet.

In this emergent reader nonfiction title, young children can meet a colorful selection of mothers and their babies. There is a little tamandua anteater baby who rides on its mother’s back and a baby white rhinoceros that weighed a whopping one hundred pounds when it was born. There is even a female western lowland gorilla who adopted a little gorilla infant who needed a mother.

For every baby animal and mother pair featured in the book, readers are given a beautiful photograph to look at and a section of text to read that combines facts about the animals with a narrative that is engaging and interesting. Many of the featured animals are endangered, and their future is uncertain. Learning about and visiting these special animals in zoos helps children to connect with and want to protect them.
