Hanukkah: A Counting Book
Novelty Board Book
For infants to age 3
Scholastic, 2010 ISBN: 978-0545214070
Celebrate Hanukkah with your little child in a new way using this clever little tri-lingual counting book. The narrative begins by showing children the “worker candle,” the Shamash (in Hebrew) or the Shames (in Yiddish). This is the candle that is used to light the eight candles in the menorah during Hanukkah.
On the page for number one, we see a picture of a menorah along with the number one, and the word one written in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish. There is also one small punched out candle on the page.
On the page for number two, we see a picture of two jelly doughnuts, a treat that is eaten during Hanukkah. There are two punched out candles on the page along with the letter two and the words for two written in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish.
The counting book continues with three elephants, four dreidels, five coins, six Maccabees, seven latkes, and eight nights. The narrative ends with a brief description of the Hanukkah story.
