Halloween is a special time of year. As leaves fall and as the “smell of smoke” fills the air, children of all ages carve their pumpkins, prepare their costumes, and imagine that all kinds of spooks, ghouls, and monsters will soon be out. The on the night itself they run from house to house collecting candy and enjoying the novelty of the “play-out-late, stay-out-late, magical night.”

Jane Yolen and other poets have created twelve wonderful poems which together perfectly capture the essence and excitement of Halloween from the preparations that children make before the great day, to the joys of Halloween night itself.
