One day a little girl and her dog are out picking flowers in the garden when they find a very small little bird sitting in a bush. The little girl picks up the bird and tells it to “Fly, little bird” but unfortunately the bird is just too young to fly and it ends up landing on it back in the grass. Being a kind person, the little girl decides to take care of the little bird and soon it is a part of her life sharing her story time in bed, sitting in a play tent with her, singing with her, and having its portrait painted.

Then at last, to the delight of its young friends, the little bird flies. Of course, as might be expected, the little bird is now ready to move out of the little girl’s house and into the great world outside and she has to accept that it is time for her to let her friend go.

With only two small written sentences to read, this book is perfect for children who like the independence of being able to enjoy a story without the help of an adult. Exuberant illustrations capture the joy that their friendship gives to the little bird, the little girl, and the dog. The little girl is indeed sad to lose her friend but she is also able to enjoy its success and its happiness in its new life. Letting go is never easy but it can have its own rewards.
