Since their last adventure when they managed to save the residents of Fablehaven from the shadow plague, Seth and Kendra have been leading a normal life living with their parents. Kendra has been studying the Journal of Secrets, hoping to find more information that will help her to better protect the preserves from the Society of the Evening Star. Now that Kendra and is a members of the Knights of the Dawn\, she is even more determined to do her part to keep the hidden artifacts hidden. If the Sphinx, the leader of the Society of the Evening Star, gets his hands on all five artifacts he will be able to open the gate to the great demon prison and life on Earth will never be the same.
Just because things have been quiet does not mean that the race to find the artifacts has ended. The Knights of the Dawn and their allies know that the Sphinx is just biding his time and he could strike again at any moment. For this reason Kendra and Seth have members of the Knights of the Dawn guarding them at all times. Unfortunately, the vigilance of the bodyguards is not enough and the Sphinx manages to kidnap Kendra by putting a duplicate in her place.
The Sphinx forces Kendra to use the Oculus, one of the artifacts that he has managed to find. He plans on using the device to find the remaining hidden artifacts. When she uses the Oculus Kendra is not able to see anything that can help the Sphinx, and before he can make her do anything else against her will she manages to escape, thanks to the help of an unknown ally.
Back at Fablehaven, Kendra the others use the information that they get from the Journal of Secrets to find out where another of the hidden artifacts, the Translocator, is hidden. At first they decide to leave the artifact where it is, but when they find out that the Sphinx is going after it, they have no choice but to try to retrieve it first. Unfortunately, the key to the vault where the Translocator is hidden is located in Wyrmroost, a dragon sanctuary in Montana. The Knights of the Dawn are going to need the first horn of a unicorn to open the gate of the sanctuary. Then they are going to have to deal with the dragons who live on the sanctuary. Though the Knights of the Dawn expect to face dangerous situations, they never expect the surprises and betrayal that await them.
In this fourth Fablehaven title, the author gives readers a thrilling story that is full of fantastical creatures, colorful characters, and unexpected plot changes. Readers will be especially surprised when they find out that one of the Knights of the Dawn is a traitor.
