While he is hanging out with his two satyr friends, Newel and Doren, Seth finds out that something very unsettling is going on in Fablehaven. Some of the magical creatures who live on the preserve are becoming dark creatures of evil. Seth's grandfather, who is the caretaker of the preserve, has no idea how to stop the spread of this plague and he worries that the whole of Fablehaven might soon fall into the hands of dark forces. In the past, Grandpa Sorenson would have asked other people who work to safeguard the world's magical creatures to help him. However, since the rise of the Society of the Evening Star, Grandpa Sorenson does not know whom to trust.

While this troubling situation gets rapidly worse, Kendra and some friends travel to another preserve to retrieve another magical artifact before it falls into the hands of the Society of the Evening Star. The job turns out to be a lot more hazardous than Kendra imagined, and she comes to understand how at risk the preserves are.

This third title in the Fablehaven series takes Seth and Kendra on a fascinating series of adventures that test their respective talents in new ways. Readers will never know what to expect next, and there will be times when they will really wonder if Kendra and Seth are going to survive this ordeal in one piece.
