It is a rainy day and puddles have formed on the ground. A blue bird with yellow polka dots on its body (and very large, bright yellow legs) eyes a puddle with glee. It then proceeds to splash around in the puddle. Soon it is “1 dirty birdie” that is covered with mud.

Not far away the blue bird (still covered with mud) sees a little green bird who is busy painting a picture. Purple paint flies and the green bird is soon daubed with purple splotches.

The two dirt birdies soon come across a large yellow bird that is busy exploring a hole in the ground. When its head emerges, the head is, not surprisingly, very dirty indeed. Now there are three dirty birdies, and it would appear that more dirty birdies will soon be joining them!

This clever counting book will delight young children, who will chuckle when they see what the funny looking birds on the pages get up to. At the back of the book the author offers us some tips on how to make counting the birdies fun.
