Many young children are drawn to animals. They want to pat every cat or dog they see. They learn to recognize pictures of animals, and learn their names. They like to pretend that they are animals and run around barking, meowing, roaring, or hooting. Knowing how much children love animals, many children’s book authors and illustrators have animal characters in their stories. Some, like Andrew Zuckerman, use images of animals to help children to learn basic skills.

In this book Andrew Zuckerman pairs his extraordinary photos of animals with a very simple text to help children learn their numbers. He begins with “1 kangaroo jumping,” and we see a picture of a kangaroo that is jumping across the page. For number three we see “3 chimpanzees running” and there they are, moving from left to right in various running poses. In some of the photos, what we are presented with is not what we expect at all, which keeps us turning the pages to find out what is coming next.
