Bruce is a very grumpy bear who, by sheer happenstance, is now the mother of four geese. Naturally, since Bruce is their mother, the geese live with him in his home. Bruce is not happy about this situation but he is resigned to it, and he does his best to be a good mother to his avian charges. What makes his living arrangements intolerable is the fact that three mice also live with him, and the only reason that they are there is because, try as he might, Bruce cannot get rid of them.
Sharing a home with three very messy and disruptive mice is so upsetting that Bruce decides to leave his snug little house under a hill. He sets off on his motorbike, with the four geese in the sidecar.
After a certain amount of searching, Bruce finds a home for himself and his geese ‘children.’ It is wonderfully quiet and deliciously free of mice. There is only one problem; the geese are very unhappy. Nothing Bruce does cheers them up.
This wonderful picture book is deliciously funny, and at the same time it is sweet. Children will see how Bruce, who really does not like any company at all, copes with his housemates; and how, in the end, love and friendship wins out.
