Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews
Big Yellow Sunflower
Novelty Book
For ages 3 to 5
Candlewick, 2008 ISBN: 978-0763637248
A little seed has fallen to the ground. A curious mouse wonders "what will you be?" A similarly curious mole, when it comes across the seed as it excavates a burrow, also wonders what the seed will turn into. When a worm sees the seed sending out roots it ponders the very same question.
Other creatures watch the seed as it sends out a shoot and as it grows little leaves. Under the warmth of the sun and with the sprinkling of rain the plant grows and grows until it produces a bud. A bee landing on the unfolding bud knows exactly what kind of flower is going to be revealed. It will be a sunflower!
As they have read about how each little animal wonders about and admires the new plant, the young reader gets to unfold a new page in this unique novelty book. By the end of the story the reader has a large completely unfolded paper sunflower to admire. As the perfect finale, if you lift the top half of sunflower's center you will find out how to grow your own sunflower.
Delightful illustrations and a clever format make this book a perfect title for little children who like gardens and growing things.
