Bear cannot sleep and eventually he gets up and leaves his den. To say that he is in a bad mood is an understatement. Hearing Bear’s grumpy growl and seeing the frown on his face, Hedgehog asks his big friend what’s the matter. Bear explains that he cannot sleep. Hedgehog then tells Bear that what he needs is “something to snuggle up with.”

It turns out that bear does not know anything about stuffed animals that help animals to go to sleep. Hedgehog shows him his stuffed animal. It is pink, small, soft, and it has big ears. For Hedgehog his “lovey” is just what he needs to fall asleep at night.

Bear wonders what kind of “lovey” a big fellow like him should have. He goes around asking the other animals in the forest what they cuddle at night. Perhaps they will be able to help him find the right cuddly animal for him.

Children who treasure the soft toys that they sleep with at night are going to feel sorry for the bear in this tale, who has nothing to cuddle when it gets dark. They will hope that the perfect “lovey” can be found for him, and will be delighted when they see how the tale ends.
