Peter Spier

Peter Spier is no stranger to literature awards and critical acclaim. His storybooks and illustrations have won him Caldecott recognition, Boston Globe-Horn Awards, Christopher Medals, and a Children’s Science Book Award.

Spier was born and educated in Amsterdam, serving in the Royal Dutch Navy before coming to New York in 1952. He came from a line of illustrators. His father was a well-known Dutch illustrator and journalist and his grandfather drew in his spare time.

Spier has illustrated more than 100 books. He started out using pen and ink drawings and later switched to all pencil drawings. One of his hobbies might explain why he was able to draw such excellent pictures in Noah’s Ark: Spier builds ship models in his spare time.
