Joan W. Blos

Joan W. Blos

Newbery Award winner Joan Blos did not start out to be an author. She was born in 1928 and was almost forty years old when her first book was published. She studied physiology and child development and taught children's literature. Joan likes to write historical fiction because of the research. She refers to it "as a treasure hunt" and says "she has to tell herself to stop researching and to start writing." Her good friend author Betty Miles describes Joan as a "caring person" and Joan feels that writing is a special kind of caring -- "about the world and all that goes on in it, about finding the words that will tell about those things, and about the people who will read the words." She currently lives in Ann Arbor,  Michigan.
