Even though Artemis Fowl has had more adventures than any one person is entitled to, he does not want to live the quiet life. Going to school and being a normal fourteen year old boy is a boring existence. Luckily something decidedly interesting is going on at the moment. Demons are turning up on earth. Unlike his fairy friends Artemis has figured out how to determine when and where these materializations are going to occur. Unfortunately he is not the only one who has figured this out. There is someone else out there who seems to be bent on acquiring a demon.

It would appear that demons are a branch of the fairy family, a branch which decided that it would not join the rest of fairy kind underground. Instead the demons created a time tunnel and they went to live on an island in exile in another dimension. Now however, the magic which holds the demon island in place is failing and it is doubtful that it will last much longer

Luckily a special elite fairy unit called Section Eight also knows that demons have been turning up on earth. Holly Short and Mulch Diggums are recruited by the unit and are then sent to the surface to join Artemis and Butler in the quest to make sure that any demon that arrives on earth does not fall into the wrong hands. This turns out to be a bigger challenge than anyone imagined was possible. Not only are there too many people trying to get their hands on a demon, but the world that the demon comes from is falling apart. If it does do this then all the demons will be homeless and many may die - a state of affairs that cannot be allowed to happen even if demons are violent creatures without much sense. It is up to Artemis, his friends and some new demon acquaintances to do their very best to save the lost colony and to try to bring them back to earth in one piece.

In this incredibly gripping fifth book in the Artemis Fowl series, Artemis once again proves that he is a young man unlike any other. Artemis rises to the challenges presented to him and he is willing to risk all to save the lives of others, something which the Artemis of a few years ago would never have considered doing. Eoin Colfer weaves an incredible tale peopled with bizarre but wonderfully alive characters and takes us on a delightful and somehow completely believable adventure.
