Every year, “When red and yellow leaves are on the trees,” a little girl and her parents bundle up in warm clothes and then drive to Comstock Farm. It is time to pick apples and pumpkins. While the farms animals look on with interest, Mr. Comstock gives the family a bushel basket and then they walk to the orchard, followed by geese, chickens “and a big, fat turkey.”

Soon the little girl and her parents are picking apples and they keep picking until their bushel basket is full of the ripe fruit. Next, they go to the pumpkin patch. The little girl looks around until she finds “the best pumpkin of all.”

With a simple story, the author of this book beautifully captures a little girl’s enjoyment when she goes to a farm to pick apples and pumpkins. Sometimes the best times in life are the times that we spend with family sharing simple seasonal pleasures such as apple picking and pumpkin carving.
