It is fall and the brown bear invites a rabbit to share his cave with him where they will be snug and warm for the winter months. At first the rabbit is reluctant to go into the cave because he wants to enjoy eating the food that is still available and to look at the countryside around, but when the frost arrives, the rabbit is more than willing to help his large friend prepare for their winter sleep.
At last the bear and rabbit are snug in the bear’s cave. The friends wish each “pleasant dreams,” and say “Good night.” The bear is soon asleep, but the rabbit is restless. Is it right to sleep away the winter when there are so many experiences and sights to enjoy outside?
In this memorable picture book Nancy Willard’s beautiful lyrical text that is touched with rhyme and imagery, is paired with Jerry Pinkney’s lovely artwork. Anyone who has felt confined indoors on a winter’s day will appreciate this story.
