Skunk’s Spring Surprise
Leslea Newman
Illustrated by Valeri Gorbachev
Picture Book
Ages 3 to 5
Harcourt, 2007, 0-15-205683-1
Winter is finally over and Skunk has woken up. She is thrilled that her “winter nap is done” and in no time she is ready to go off to find her woodland friends. Skunk eagerly calls out for her friends, looking for them in all the usual places and yet she cannot find them anywhere.
Dispirited, hot, and thirsty Skunk decides to go down to the lake for a drink and when she arrives at the water’s edge she gets a big and delightful surprise. All her friends are there and they are waiting just for her to wake up and join them. They have been planning a show for months and now their guest of honor is on the scene.
This charming picture book with its lively, bouncy and cheerful illustrations and its engaging rhyming text is a wonderful celebration of spring and friendship.
