Poppleton in Winter

Cynthia Rylant

Illustrated by Mark Teague

Fiction (Series)

Ages 6 to 8

Scholastic, 2001, 0-545-06823-1

It is winter and there are large icicles hanging from the eves of Poppleton’s house. Though several people have told Poppleton that he should get rid of the icicles, the pig has no interest in doing so. He likes his icicles.

And then a bird flies into the icicles by accident and knocks them all down. The bird, Patrick, is very sorry that Poppleton’s pretty icicles have been dislodged, and he comes up with a wonderful idea of what they should do with them.

This is just one of three delightful wintery stories about Poppleton the pig and his friends. The first is about Poppleton’s icicles, the second is about Poppleton’s wintertime artistic endeavor, and the third is about Poppleton’s birthday – which he forgets!

Young readers who are making the transition to reading books by themselves will greatly enjoy this seasonal offering. Children will find themselves getting into Poppleton’s stories as they read, and it is likely that they will want to read more about this delightful pig in the future.
