Alfie wins a prize
Shirley Hughes
Picture Book (series)
Ages 3 to 6
Random House (UK), 2004, 0-370-32824-8
Alfie and his family are going to the Harvest Festival. There is going to be a pet show and a children's painting competition in addition to the usual sideshows, sales, and wonderful foods to eat. Alfie would like to enter the family cat in the pet show but it is decided that Chessie might not cooperate so instead Alfie makes a painting for the competition. His "Motorbike Man" picture is very special and Alfie has high hopes that he will win one of the prizes.
Alfie and his family have a wonderful time looking at all the things on display and for sale at the festival until it is time to announce the painting competition winners. Alfie is delighted when he does indeed win a prize though the prize itself is not that exciting. He cannot help wishing that he had won the funny looking soft toy instead of the bubble bath. The girl who won the soft toy isn't at all happy about her prize saying that the toy is too babyish for her. Can Alfie fix this situation so that both children can be happy with their prizes?
Once again Shirley Hughes has created a wonderful tale about Alfie, the little boy who has just the kind of childhood adventures that we remember having ourselves. Warm and detailed illustrations fill the pages, and fans of the Alfie and Annie Rose books will not be disappointed by this highly satisfactory little story.
