School starts today and Chepito does not want to go. He runs out the door, and outside he sees a big man. Chepito, who loves to ask questions, asks the man what he is doing. The man explains that he is reading the paper. “Why, why, why?” asks curious Chepito. The man replies that he reading the paper so that he can find out who won the game.

In the park, Chepito meets a girl who is reading a comic. Curious to know why she is reading, Chepito asks “Why, why, why?” and the girl tells him that she likes to read comics because they are funny.

Everywhere Chepito goes he finds people reading. The is a woman reading a guidebook, a mechanic reading a car manual, a young woman reading a magazine, and an archeologist reading hieroglyphics.

When Chepito gets to school later that day, he discovers that something wonderful happens there.

In this simple yet powerful book, Elisa Amado shows children that reading is a valuable skill. Books educate, entertain, enlighten, and guide those who read them. With a text that perfectly captures a little boy’s voice and expressive illustrations, this picture book is perfect for children who are reluctant to go to school and reluctant to learn how to read.
