Poppleton the pig is feeling "landlocked," so he decides to go to the beach for the day. Poppleton invites his friend Hudson to go with him, and soon the two friends are on the bus with their picnic basket and their folding beach chairs. On the bus, Poppleton and Hudson meet a group of charming older ladies. The "Sassy Sues" teach Poppleton some new songs, a few new dances, and how to win at poker.

Later, on the beach, Poppleton and Hudson sit in their beach chairs, they eat their sandwiches, and they collect some shells. It is a perfect day.

In this delightful trio of stories, Cynthia Rylant gives beginner readers the opportunity to flex their reading muscles as they read entertaining and often amusing tales. The everyday experiences that Poppleton shares with his friends are heart warming, and at times downright laugh-out-loud funny.
