California Gold Rush
On Januaury 24th, 1848, James Wilson Marshall found gold in a mill race in Sutter's Mill in California. Word soon got out and it wasn't long before thousands of people from all over the United States and beyond flocked to California to seek their fortunes. The rush lasted until 1855 and because of it San Francisco grew into a proper town and California was admitted as a free state into the United States of America.
