Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews

The Albert Whitman Company has been publishing children’s books since 1919. We are best known for the classic series The Boxcar Children® Mysteries, but we are so much more. Our highly praised picture books, novels, and nonfiction titles succeed in reaching out to children and teens of all backgrounds and experiences. Albert Whitman’s special interest and issue titles address subjects such as disease, social issues, and disabilities. All Albert Whitman books treat their readers in a caring and respectful manner, helping them to grow intellectually and emotionally.

We’re very excited because 2011 brings the release of the first two books from Albert Whitman Teen:

Guantanamo Boy “A chilling and horrifying story of an innocent 15-year-old London-born Pakistani boy who is captured by the U.S. government, taken to Guantanamo Prison and tortured until he collapses. The novel will raise important questions related to government profiling, human rights, and the use of ‘torture.’ This may well become one of the most important teen novels about social justice of the new century. It will be chewed up, debated, and hopefully digested.”—Pat Scales, Librarian, Author, and member, National Coalition Against Censorship Council of Advisors

The Poisoned House “A scullery maid, a great house, whispered evil and a ghost populate this first-person tale of mid-19th-century London…. In all, scary, compelling and atmospheric enough for a satisfying chill.”—Kirkus Reviews

We’re also re-issuing a deluxe hardcover edition – with a new design and paperdolls – of the much-loved Flicka, Ricka, Dicka and Their New Skates.

In addition, we have recently received some really great awards.

The Buddy Files: The Case of the Lost Boy (Book 1) won the 2011 Edgar® Award for Best Juvenile Myster

Zapato Power: Freddie Ramos Takes Off (Book 1) won the 2010 CYBILS Award for Best Short Chapter Book.

Looking ahead to 2012, there is going to be the 70th Anniversary of The Boxcar Children® -- keep an eye out for a new cover artists in the Spring and a prequel written by Newbery medalist Patricia MacLachlan in the Fall.
